This simple, beautiful crochet washcloth free pattern is quick and easy to make. Keep it for yourself or give a handmade gift any homemaker will love!

30-minute crochet washcloth with skein of yarn and crochet hook

Stitches Used in Crochet Washcloth Free Pattern

  • Chain (Ch)
  • Slip Stitch (SL ST): Insert your hook through the stitch to which you’re wanting to connect, yarn over, and pull through.
  • Single Crochet (SC): Insert your hook, yarn over and pull up a loop, yarn over again and pull through both loops.
  • Herringbone Half Double Crochet (HHDC): Yarn over, insert your hook, yarn over, pull up a loop and pull through the first loop on the hook, yarn over again and pull through remaining two loops.

Materials Needed

  • Crochet hook: here’s a great starter set
  • Worsted weight cotton yarn, such as I Love This Cotton Yarn
  • Tapestry or yarn needle: no need to get fancy here; these yarn needles work great
  • Scissors

Instructions

  • Ch 30.
  • Row 1: HHDC into each stitch across the row, beginning in the second chain from hook. Ch 1 and turn your work.
  • Rows 2-27: Work HHDC in each of the stitches across the row. Ch 1 and turn.
  • Border Row 1: SC in each stitch around all four sides of dish cloth. When you get to the end of the fourth side, SL ST into the first SC to join. Ch 3.
  • Border Row 2: SC in the second stitch from the hook, then *Ch 3, skip a stitch and SC in the next stitch* until you’ve made it around all four sides. Slip stitch into the first SC and tie off. Cut the end of the yarn, leaving a few inches to weave in.
  • Weave in ends with a yarn needle. All done!

Sizing

You can make your washcloth any size. I find that when I use average worsted-weight cotton yarn, beginning with a chain of 30 is a good size. But feel free to add more (to make it larger) or add less (to make it smaller) stiches in your foundation chain.

Border

Feel free to mix up your border as well! I like using the simple, delicate scalloped edge, but get as creative as you want! Whatever border you use, I encourage you to begin with a single crochet the whole way around before adding border design.

Gift-Giving

For gift-giving, I enjoy making sets of washcloths. Consider choosing three or four coordinating colors of the same yarn. Keep the body of the washcloth all the same and change up the borders if you’d like. Tie them together with ribbon or twine for a beautifully presented, and thoughtfully made, one-of-a-kind gift.
